How to Destroy Angels has a six track EP coming this summer and they’re planning to have an LP ready for early 2011.

The new album is composed of ten tracks that will explore a “more organic and analog” sound in comparison to Trentemøller’s previous work.

The single is available now alongside a radio edit and four remixes.

They’ve also launched a Track of the Month feature on their site, with a previously unreleased song or alternate mix being made freely available each month. You can get at those here upon logging in.

Goldfrapp recently unveiled the first music video accompanying their fifth album, Head First. “Rocket” gets a very vibrant and quite literal video interpretation. Look out for the little cameo by Will Gregory, the other half of the band opposite frontwoman Alison Goldfrapp.

Details have been announced for the third LP from Flying Lotus, Cosmogramma. Thom Yorke notably provides guest vocals on one track. Both Flying Lotus and Thom Yorke will be at Coachella, so maybe Yorke will pop up in at the Flying Lotus set to do his song. There probably won’t be many other instances where that song could be done live. Laura Darlington has guested on a single track on each of Flying Lotus LP and that trend continues here. Thundercat brings his bass skills to “Mmmhmm”. Ravi Coltrane and harpist Rebekah Raff also contributed to the album.

Warp Records is releasing Cosmogramma the week of May 3rd, so that’s May 4th for North American buyers.

Go will be released in North America on April 6th.

The ‘story’ of the virtual band’s characters is described like this:

The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.

There are also three little trailers for the album up at the Gorillaz YouTube channel. They feature looks at the so-called Plastic Beach along with some tunes which may or may not be elements from the album itself. Could these clips be any sort of hint at the style of any of the album’s accompanying

2562 – Unbalance: This is the second LP from Dave Huismans under the 2562 moniker. It’s more or less glitchy dubstep with occasional appearances by the sorts of ethereal background vocals known to the genre.

“Flashback”:

Air – Love 2: French electronic duo Air delivers another great record that returns to a more playful sound after the darker Pocket Symphony. They’re responsible for some of the more cheerful and carefree electronic music nowadays and Love 2 doesn’t disappoint. And no, it’s not actually a sequel album.

“Sing Sang Sung”:

Dextro – Winded: Light, relaxing tunes that strike a balance between electronic and post rock sounds.

“Distance”:

Fever Ray – Fever Ray: I’ve made no secret that this is my absolute favorite album of the year. Karin Dreijer Andersson takes a break from The Knife with this solo effort and crafts an astoundingly moody, even creepy at times, sound with occult aesthetics.

“When I Grow Up”:

IAMX – Kingdom of Welcome Addiction: Chris Corner returns with his third solo album as IAMX, providing more of the dark, subversive glam rock/electro you’d expect from him. As he puts it, the album is “like Disney World but with lipstick, cynicism and wit.”

“Tear Garden”:

There have been updates before about expecting Radiohead to get back in the studio to work on a follow-up to In Rainbows, whether that be a true LP or a series of singles and EPs or whatever, but that news has been reconfirmed by Ed O’Brien, the band’s guitarist. He writes at Dead Air Space that the “vibe in the camp is fantastic at present” and excited by the evolution the band continues to undergo.

I am so genuinely excited about what we’re doing, but for obvious reasons I can’t divulge anything more.. anyway we all love surprises don’t we? 10 years ago we were all collectively (that’s the band) in the land of Kid A .. and although hugely proud of that record, it wasn’t a fun place to be .. What’s reassuring now, is that we are most definitely a different band, which should therefore mean that the music is different too and that is the aim of the game….keep it moving.

Nice to hear there’s progress on their next outing. Hopefully we’ll see a new release formalize by fall 2010 or so.

Jónsi’s made the first track available at his site in exchange for your email address. The trade is well worth it as “Boy Lilikoi” is damned good.

After the fold I’ve included a letter by Jónsi’s manager, John Best, that discusses the album’s creation.

For years – I mean literally since I’ve known him (10 years now) – Jonsi has been beavering away in his kitchen, bedroom or living room making music extra-curricular to Sigur Ros. To be honest we’d kind of gotten used to these being drawing board propositions only – the ambient album, the electronic album, the pop album, the acoustic album, etc. It’s not that we didn’t doubt his work ethic; these things certainly existed, it’s just that they seemed more conceptual than real; creation to sate Jonsi’s enormous energy rather than anything we’d ever have to put on a release schedule. But then last year he went and finished Riceboy Sleeps, an album that had existed as a soundtrack to his and Alex Somer’s artwork far in advance of being an actual record. And then he started on about the *acoustic* album and bounced straight off the back of Med sud i eyrum… into the studio (alright, apartment) with Icelander-by-proxy Nico Muhly.

It seemed apparent to us that it would be missing a trick to limit a bona fide Jonsi solo album to being a small scale acoustic project, so some subtle cajoling and encouragement to reach beyond his comfort zone was the order of the day. we shot the breeze about producers and Peter Katis’s name came up off the back of his work with Fanfarlo and The National. Jonsi weighed in with drummer Samuli from Mum, who he’d heard playing with Alex in Nordic art supergroup Kira Kira. Suddenly the *acoustic* record wasn’t looking so acoustic after all. From then on it’s been a slow and ineluctable slide towards the full-on, barely contained, glorious mayhem soon to be available on Go.

Everything about this record has a seat of the pants feel about it, its wildly shifted focus, the way nothing (including the album itself) had a title til about an hour before the news hit the blogs; the fact that as I type I still have no idea what is going to be on the cover; or that, even though Jonsi is currently on a plane to New York to master the record we’ve no clear idea of what order the songs are going to appear in, or even, in some cases, which versions of songs are going to be used. It’s edge of the seat, it’s exciting, it’s infectious. I think we are beginning to sense that maybe Jonsi has created something super special here. More than that in fact, I think he has created something really special here. I’m not sure I’ve felt this excited about a project since the time I first heard Agaetis Byrjun, right back in 1999. Holy fuck. Are you ready?.

After being tentatively scheduled for this past September and then delayed without ever really acknowledging the original target date, BT’s sixth album, now titled These Hopeful Machines, will be released on February 2nd, 2010. It’s the followup to This Binary Universe which is seriously one of the decade’s true masterpieces, so I’m absolutely psyched to see where he takes his music next. The new album is a double CD of two hours and twelve tracks.

You can already hear “Rose of Jericho” and an Armin van Buuren’s remix of “Every Other Way” was featured on the Universal Religion 4 comp CD. You can read the full press release of the album announcement here.

Goldfrapp has revealed that it’s fifth LP is incoming, with a release date of March 22nd. The album is titled Head First and based on Popjustice‘s reaction to hearing the first single “Rocket”, it seems they’re back to the disco-esque sound.

In the same way that ‘Ooh La La’ was a glam record that wasn’t really a glam record and was in fact just a Goldfrapp record, ‘Rocket’ is an Italo-esque disco record that isn’t really an Italo-esque disco record and is just in fact a Goldfrapp record, albeit one which sounds a bit like Van Halen vs Laura Branigan.

Anyway, very exciting stuff. 2010 is shaping up to be a really packed year for my musical tastes. Just the first couple months look to have Goldfrapp, UNKLE, Massive Attack, Four Tet, BT, Gorillaz and FlyKKiller dropping new albums. Looking good!

The “Rocket” single is scheduled for release on March 8th.

Fever Ray is the solo project of Karin Dreijer Andersson (The Knife) and for my money, the debut album is the best 2009 has yet delivered and it’s only $5 to download off Amazon right now. I can’t recommend it enough.

The details and title for Massive Attack’s fifth LP have officially been revealed. The new album is called Heligoland and features ten tracks. Virgin will release it in the states on February 9th (8th in all the cool territories that get new music on Mondays). The tracklist follows along with each song’s vocalists.

Interestingly, it seems that “Bulletproof Love”, which showed up in a remixed form on the Splitting the Atom EP, hasn’t made the cut.

It’ll be seven years to the month between Heligoland and the band’s last record, 100th Window, so I’m pretty psyched for a whole slew of new tracks from my favorite band. Can’t wait!

The oncoming new material is being kicked off with the nine-minute single “Love Cry” which is getting a vinyl release on December 8th. For now, you can hear it at his MySpace page or below.

We Fell to Earth is the new band formed by Richard File (previously of UNKLE) and Wendy Rae Fowler. Unfortunately, their music has yet to be released in the United States, though you can hear more than half their tracks between their official site and MySpace. It’s a shame how many great acts don’t get distribution in the U.S.

“Deaf” will be released as a single on November 16th in the UK.

Andreas Nilsson directs the video, which features all the spooky costumes and haunting sets that you’d expect from Fever Ray. You just gotta love the creepy, antique lamps, which are also major props for Fever Ray’s stage show. Here’s the video, as premiered by Vanity Fair.

The other cover song is also available for listening. That track is “Here Before”, originally by Vashti Bunyan, which you can hear below.

There’s still a couple months left in the year, but I’m pretty damned sure Fever Ray will remain my favorite album of 2009. It’s just that good.

Massive Attack

While talking to Clash Music, Massive Attack’s Daddy G let it be known that they’re planning a collaboration with dubstep producer Burial. The project would be similar to the No Protection album, which involved dub producer Mad Professor rejiggering most of Protection, but this would be based on their still untitled fifth LP, coming in February. Daddy G added that “we’ve been listening to a lot of the stuff that he does and he’s just amazing. The way he does his layers, his drums and stuff like that. The dubstep thing is amazing, there’s a lot of really good people there – Kode9 is great as well. These kids are just amazing and we want to be part of that.” Count me in. Massive Attack’s up there in my top two favorite bands/artists and Burial’s amazing. I only hope it comes to fruition, as Burial remains an artist who’s difficult to pin down to projects.

Massive Attack’s Splitting the Atom was released earlier this week. The four track EP serves as a prelude to the much anticipated full album in February.

One of the remixes off the single has also hit. First up is The Thin White Duke’s remix.

Other details about the forthcoming music have also emerged. The album is looking to be ten to twelve tracks and they’ve got at least six b-sides laying around. Fortunately for fans, Massive Attack plans to release around three b-sides, outtakes and/or remixes every month on their site for free in the run-up to the album release. So there’s going to be a whole lot of great new music from these guys over the next few months. I’m also really pleased to hear that Martina Topley-Bird sang on a second track too, which should be on the LP. She’s also paired up with them for their European tour as the opening act and will be featured during their set as well. If that pairing remains when/if the North American tour is announced and they hit Los Angeles, I’ll be willing to plunk down quite a lot of cash to see that.

Splitting the Atom is due for digital and vinyl release on October 6th for the US and the 5th for Europe.

The art I posted above is what MA.IE says will accompany Splitting the Atom. It’s obviously a work by Robert “3D” Del Naja but it strikes me as odd to use it for a Massive Attack record when it’s extremely similar to the artwork he’s done for the recent UNKLE albums.

The untitled fifth LP remains scheduled for February and now that an EP is arriving, it’s finally looking somewhat definite. The wait has been almost as excruciating as for Portishead’s Third, but if Massive Attack can bring the goods like they did, we’re in for a treat. For now, we’ve got one new track today and three more coming in a few weeks!

Modest Mouse has released a new music video for “King Rat”. The video’s been anticipated for a while because Heath Ledger was directing it before his death. The end result is both an awesome song and a really great video that work quite well together. It begins with anthropomorphic whales on a fishing vessel looking for their next catch and then things get crazy through a couple tonal and tempo changes. The art’s fantastic too, with drawings by Daniel Auber, who also co-directed.

“King Rat” is off Modest Mouse’s No One’s First, and You’re Next EP.

The first official single is also now available. “Uprising” can be heard at Muse’s site if you’re registered or just buy it. Of the two songs we’ve now heard, I think I prefer “United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)” but it also just makes more of an impact without context, which makes “Uprising” an odd single pick.

The Resistance will be released on September 15th (14th in Europe).

Muse’s fifth LP, The Resistance, will be released on September 15th (14th in Europe). “Uprising” is scheduled to be the album’s first single and will drop the week before the album.

I’ve got a real soft spot for the second disc opener “Secret (Andrew Bayer Remix)”, although it’s also new to me while the awesome “Miracle” and “Sirens of the Sea” remixes were already available on other singles. Every track is a winner though, I’ve been listening to the album for a week rather nonstop and I’m never skipping anything, a practice prone to happen on uneven albums after a couple listens. The remixed album also includes versions of their pre-Sirens of the Sea singles that weren’t on that album, including “Clear Blue Water”, “Satellite”, “Sky Falls Down” and “Beautiful Together”.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that this group/brand yields more singles and albums in the future because I really love what they’ve accomplished so far. While I wouldn’t want them to abandon their other projects, I’d hate for OceanLab to get left in the lurch.

Secondly and slightly tangentially, UNKLE’s James Lavelle is the man behind Global Underground 37th mix release. Lavelle previously did GU23 and GU26. GU37 Bangkok is due out August 3rd and features 30 songs across two discs. The aforementioned “Heavy Drug (Surrender Sounds Mix)” will appear in an edited form alongside other UNKLE pieces and tracks from the likes of Doves, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Dubfire, James Holden, The Big Pink and many more. There’s a 20 minute promo sampler of the release you can download here in zipped form. Based on that, I’ll be picking this release up. I’ve put the full tracklist below the fold.
