Bryan Singer Signs on for X-Men Origins: First Class

X-Men: First ClassBryan Singer attended the Los Angeles premiere party for Avatar dropped some big news in an interview that he’s just signed with Fox to direct X-Men Origins: First Class. That’s the planned X-Men prequel spin-off that would follow the very first students at Charles Xavier’s School for the Gifted, including the likes of Jean Grey, Scott Summers and Beast. Obviously Wolverine is unlikely to appear. The idea would be to turn this into its own line of films, much like X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

My interest is mixed. On the one hand, Singer’s the guy who actually got the X-Men right with X2. On the other hand, how often do prequels really work out? There’s always that dangerous balancing act of finding something bigger and better to put to screen even though it tends to simultaneously make the chronologically later films smaller. Usually superheros and the like see their adventures grow bigger in time, but prequels tend to screw that up. Another problem is that so many of the major X-Men were introduced later in the chronology so how many are available for X-Men Origins: First Class? At this point I think a real reboot is what’s needed for the franchise.
