It’s long been said to be on the cards, but a Fantastic Voyage remake produced by James Cameron is moving closer to reality. MTV confirms that this is the project Production Weekly mentioned earlier in the week that Shane Salerno was scripting. Cameron won’t be directing, however, so it might prove interesting to see who Fox goes after for the gig.
I’m not really sure how exciting a retelling of doctors being shrunk to microscopic size and traveling through a human body in order to save its life really is, but this time around it’ll be done with fancy new CGI and stereoscopic effects. I’d like to be really cynical about it and be annoyed that Cameron’s spending his producing efforts on a remake, but he produced Soderbergh’s extremely excellent update of Solaris, so I’ll hold my tongue. At least Cameron says the new film would be “quite different” but “recogniz[able]“.
Meanwhile, he’s undecided on his next directing job. He has ideas for Avatar sequels and he’s been developing an adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, but nothing’s set. I’d love to see Battle Angel Alita on the big screen, but I really don’t think Cameron’s right for that material, so I kinda hope he just lets those rights go. Now if the Wachowskis could do it… that’s one of my dream projects.
