Trailer: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

The Sorcerer's ApprenticeDisney continues to plumb the depths of its properties in order to come up with new movie ideas, this time around taking the classic Mickey Mouse sequence from Fantastia, contemporizing it and slapping the National Treasure team on The Sorcerer’s Apprentice feature film. That means you have a Jerry Bruckheimer production of a Jon Turteltaub-directed blockbuster starring Nicolas Cage. Cage plays a sorcerer named Balthazar in New York City engaged in an ancient battle of good and evil against Alfred Molina’s villain. Balthazar needs help however, and searches for an apprentice to teach his magic trade to, and finds the reluctant average guy played by Jay Baruchel. Action and hilarity presumably ensue. The project gets bonus points for co-starring roles by Monica Bellucci and Toby Kebbell.

Nothing in the trailer particularly offends my tastes, but I can’t say I see much of interest either. Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of magic and fantasy, so I’m not really in the target demographic anyway. It’s a collaboration of Disney and Bruckheimer though, so I’m sure it’ll be a hit at the box office.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice hits theaters on July 16th, 2010. That’s the same day as Christopher Nolan’s Inception for those already scheduling their summer movie viewing. I know which one I’ll be at.
