Matt Damon and Josh Brolin join True Grit

According to Variety, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are in negotiations to join the next Coen brothers film, True Grit. It’s based on the Charlie Portis novel which was previously adapted in 1969 and earned John Wayne an Oscar. The period western follows a 14-year old girl who teams with a United States Marshal and another lawman to find her father’s killer in Indian territory. The first adaptation focused on the Marshal while this one, as scripted by the Coens and truer to the novel, will be from the girl’s perspective. Josh Brolin would reunite with the Coen brothers in order to player the story’s killer while Matt Damon would play the lawman. Jeff Bridges was previous cast in the U.S. Marshal role. The lead role of the girl has yet to be cast.

Paramount is producing True Grit, with shooting beginning in March for a late 2010 release.
