The Weinstein Company continues to shift around its end of the year schedule. The musical Nine has been moved back with its limited opening starting December 18th while expanding on the 25th. Directed by Rob Marshall, Nine is adapted from a play inspired by Federico Fellini’s 8½. It tells the tale of a film director having simultaneous creative and personal crises while completing his latest work, and he’s lead into a number of complicated relationships with all sorts of women. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the troubled director and he’ll be surrounded by Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren and Stacy Ferguson (Fergie).
Meanwhile, A Single Man will debut in Los Angeles and New York City on December 11th and will also expand for Christmas, but to a lesser extent than Nine. Adapted from the novel by Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man takes place during one day in 1962 as a gay professor (Colin Firth) mourns the recent death of his lover (Matthew Goode) while going through the paces and considering suicide. The attentions of another young man (Nicholas Hoult) and a night out with a close friend (Julianne Moore) may change his mind. Ginnifer Goodwin also stars. Fashion designer Tom Ford made his directorial debut with this one.
