Legendary Pictures is Adapting Warren Ellis’s Gravel

Gravel: Never a Dull DayLegendary Pictures (the mammoth production company behind many of Warner Bros’ recent blockbusters, including The Dark Knight, Watchmen, 300, The Hangover) has licensed the comics series Gravel by Warren Ellis. Heat Vision reports that Ellis, who co-writes the current ongoing series with artist Mike Wolfer, will script the first draft and executive produce.

Gravel revolves around the life and work of William Gravel, a so-called combat magician employed by the British Secret Air Service who also moonlights for less savory characters. Suffice to say, he spends a lot of time dealing with the occult. The character first appeared in Strange Kiss, followed by another five mini-series before an ongoing series was started under the present title. The earlier mini-series have retroactively been incorporated within the Gravel title, such as when they were collected into one big book.

Several other Ellis properties are in various stages of development in Hollywood as well, including Ocean, Red and Global Frequency. Personally, if I could adapt any of his dozens of comics, I’d pick Orbiter. That would make a really fun and interesting film with its love of space exploration and investigation of alien technology.
