Sony Brings Gary Ross in to Work on Venom

VenomAs per Heat Vision, Sony continues to develop its Spider-Man spin-off film starring Venom as an antihero, now with Gary Ross (Big, Seabiscuit) rewriting the current script and potentially directing the film. For those who somehow don’t know, Venom is the synthesis of Eddie Brock, a journalist, and an alien symbiote, previously worn by Peter Parker for a short time, that gives its host immense strength and the ability to manipulate its skin into other shapes. The character was played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3 but he is not expected to reprise the role.

Honestly, I haven’t even seen Spider-Man 3 so I can’t really comment on the character’s treatment there. I disliked virtually everything about the first two films. That said, with a whole different creative team in place for Venom, I’m very hesitantly curious, even if Venom as an antihero was always a rather silly and ‘xtreme’ concept born of the ’90s. Venom and Eddie Brock’s time as an antihero was mostly spent battling other symbiote spawn of Venom’s notably Carnage and another team of five symbiote clones. Of course, having those guys battle on film might lead to a clusterfuck of incomprehensible CGI. Ah well, maybe Gary Ross can find a cool story in there somewhere. I certainly have a thousand times more interest in this than Spider-Man 4, which Ross is also rewriting.
