Coen Brothers Want a Barton Fink Sequel

Barton Fink posterThe last thing I would expect out of the Coen brothers is a sequel, especially given the distaste they seem to exude every time someone asks them about more adventures of The Dude. But MTV has a report where the pair seems quite sincere in having an idea for following up on Barton Fink by rejoining the character in the 1960s. They’ve even spoken to John Turturro about it and would want to wait for him to be the proper age instead of aging him up. Ethan and Joel even refer to the potential project as Old Fink. As for the story, Joel Coen says “It’s the summer of love and [Fink is] teaching at Berkeley. He ratted on a lot of his friends to the House Un-American Activities committee.”

It’s rather difficult for me to imagine a film following up on all the craziness that occurred in Barton Fink, especially given the numerous metaphors and allegories are internalized in its singular story. But who am I to doubt the Coen brothers? It doesn’t matter how insane their ideas may sound, I’d see it. I might even pay to see a Transformers sequel directed by them!

For the time being, their latest film is A Serious Man, which opens on October 2nd. They’re also gearing up for True Grit, a re-adaptation of the novel.
