Darren Aronofsky will produce and direct a film based on a massive bank heist in Britain from which the thieves took £53 million in cash. The early 2006 incident became the largest cash grab not connected to a war (for instance, the $1 billion that was stolen from the Central Bank of Iraq on the eve of the US invasion). The script will be written by Kerry Williamson based on a Sports Illustrated article and the book Heist: The Inside Story of the World’s Biggest Robbery by Howard Sounes. You might ask how the Sports Illustrated article figures in, and that would be the second most interesting bit about this story. One of the alleged thieves is Lee Murray, a mixed martial arts fighter and one time UFC participant. The journey to track him and some of the other suspects led to Morocco. Aronofsky provided this statement: “The story is a very unique British heist tale with colorful London characters. I’ve always wanted to shoot in England and Kerry is the perfect writer to bring authenticity to this outrageous true bank job.”
Meanwhile, Aronofsky is preparing to shoot Black Swan with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis (read more here).
