Trailer: A Single Man

A Single Man marks the directorial debut of Tom Ford, famed fashion designer. It was just picked up by The Weinstein Company for distribution after successfully playing the Venice and Toronto film festivals. Adapted from the novel by Christopher Isherwood, the film takes place during one day in 1962 as a gay professor (Colin Firth) mourns the recent death of his lover (Matthew Goode) while going through the paces and considering suicide. The attentions of another young man (Nicholas Hoult) and a night out with a close friend (Julianne Moore) may change his mind. Ginnifer Goodwin also stars. I can’t say I’d heard of the novel, but it’s apparently an acclaimed early piece of gay fiction and the film’s performances are receiving nothing less than enormous acclaim. On top of that the photography is beautiful, so I’m putting this on my watch list. Presumably The Weinstein Company will look to get the movie out to theaters before the year is out in order to be an awards contender.
