Magnolia Pictures has landed the North American distribution rights for Bong Joon-ho’s Mother. Magnolia previously distributed Bong’s best known film, The Host. That’s the good news, while the slightly disappointing news is that the release won’t happen until early next year. Oh well. Mother tells the story of a mother’s quest to prove the innocence of a son who has been accused of murder.
Meanwhile, the same deal also gives Magnolia the rights to Bong’s directorial debut, Barking Dogs Never Bite, which has never been released in the states before. His second feature, Memories of Murder, is already available here and I’d highly recommend it. So soon enough we’ll have Bong Joon-ho’s entire filmography available without any need for importing.
