Here’s the trailer for The Descent: Part 2, the sequel to Neil Marshall’s fantastic 2005 original. Unfortunately – and unsurprisingly – it appears to be a completely unnecessary sequel that simply retreads the first. Perhaps even worse, it looks like it’ll be making very definitive statements about the original’s ending. If you haven’t seen the original, about a group of women who go cave diving in the Appalachians and encounter subterranean humanoid creatures, check it out. It’s one of a select few films from this decade that is genuinely scary and not because of dumb jump scares. Beware if you’re the claustrophobic sort. Even if you’re not, this gets intense with its way of putting you in tight spaces.
Emerging from the cave system alone, distraught and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Sceptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah’s psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines doesn’t waste time. Along with his partner Rios, and their cave rescue team Dan, Greg, and Cath, Vaines forces Sarah back into the caves to help the rescuers find her friends.
The film is directed by Jon Harris, the editor of The Descent. The script was written by James McCarthy, J Blakeson and James Watkins. Shauna MacDonald, Natalie Mendoza, Douglas Hodge, Krysten Cummings, Gavan O’Herlihy, Joshua Dallas and Anna Skellern star in the sequel.
The Descent: Part 2 opens in the UK on December 4th.
