David Cronenberg adds Cosmopolis to slate

Cosmopolis by Don DeLilloDavid Cronenberg has been set to direct an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 2003 novel Cosmopolis. The film, produced by Paulo Branco, will shoot next year in New York and Toronto. There’s no current word on whether Cronenberg is writing the script himself or if someone else will be brought in for that. The novel follows a single day for a 28 year old billionaire as he crosses New York City in his limo to get a haircut. Along the way he encounters numerous major traffic delays (from a riot to a presidential motorcade), several chance encounters with his new wife and two stalkers. He additionally loses incredible amounts of money over the course of the day by betting against the yen. In fact, he may actually be embracing his downfall. The whole thing sounds strange, especially since from what I can tell most of the action takes place from within the limousine, but if Cronenberg likes it, then I’m already guaranteed to be in the theater on day one. I may have to go ahead and read the novel to get an idea of what’s in store.

It’s unclear whether this impacts The Matarese Circle, the Robert Ludlum adaptation that is supposed to star Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise. That project seems to remain in development while Washington moves on to shoot Tony Scott’s Unstoppable while Cruise continues to mull a half dozen projects as his potential next film. At the very least, we should have a new Cronenberg film within the next two years.
