Zemeckis clarifies possible Roger Rabbit sequel

A while back Robert Zemeckis said he had some ideas for a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit and he mentioned wanting to use motion capture, as he’s solely used in recent years. Well at Comic Con he was quizzed about this and said that Roger Rabbit and other previously traditionally animated characters would remain traditionally animated. That’s a sigh of relief for me and most other people who thought he was talking about using motion capture for those characters instead of traditional techniques. Still, he didn’t back away from saying anything about other uses for motion capture, which I’m not sure I can fathom. If not for those characters, then who? It’s not like there are any hit motion capture characters that anyone would want to see next to the likes of Roger Rabbit and the big Disney and Warner Bros toons. And I sure as hell wouldn’t want to see CGI characters, like say Buzz and Woody, motion captured. So I don’t know, hopefully all the characters included in any sequel would be done as they were conceived.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of this. Even without the motion capture controversy, I’m not sure I’d trust Zemeckis nowadays. Beowulf had problems way beyond the awful visuals and ‘animation’. I don’t think it was particularly well directed by any means. Maybe a new director should tackle Roger Rabbit’s potential return.
