It looks like Disney finally figured out what it’s going to call the TRON sequel. It’s variably gone by TR2N, TRON 2, TRON 2.0 and even just TRON, but now they’ve settled upon TRON Legacy. I guess that’s as good as any and at least it’s pronounceable and something original. It seems to reflect the plot as well.
The new film marks the directorial debut of Joseph Kosinski. Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett star. That’s right, Jeff Bridges returns. The plot synopsis follows:
Sam Flynn (Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.
At the Comic Con panel it was said that the TRON program has been isolated since the original film’s time period and that it’s evolved into a much more complicated and realistic place. TRON Legacy is apparently coming out sometime in 2010 as a big 3D (ugh) tentpole. Other than the 3D nonsense, I’m looking forward to this one. It should be fun to see all the concepts from the 1982 film extrapolated with current technology and ideas.
Oh, and Daft Punk is doing the score. It was said that they’ve done 24 tracks and are likely to tour for the film with their new music. Just another cool bonus to make this movie look even better.
