Albert and Allen Hughes (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell) return to direct The Book of Eli. Written by Gary Whitta, the film follows Eli (Denzel Washington) as he crosses a post-apocalyptic America who must protect a book that could hold the secrets to saving mankind. Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Michael Gambon and Jennifer Beals co-star. Here’s the first trailer.
I’m inclined to say this looks pretty cool. Denzel Washington is back to a lean look and it appears both he and the directors have committed to the fight choreography enough that we’ll get to watch it in long shots rather than quickly cut montages. I’m not sure what to make of the storyline, which could easily become real hokey. Why is the Earth so destroyed and what’s in that book that could change everything? I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.
The Book of Eli will be released by Warner Bros on January 15th, 2010.
