Trailer: 2012

Roland Emmerich is back to destroying the world after his disastrous-in-another-way 10,000 BC. This time around he seems to be throwing every possible disaster scenario into the mix as the fabled December 21st, 2012 apocalypse arrives. It also seems to grab the subplot from Deep Impact where governments have secretly been constructing arks to allow a small population of mankind to survive a cataclysmic event and turn it into the main plot. The film stars John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Oliver Platt. I also see that the awesome Patrick Bauchau has a supporting role. Roland Emmerich co-wrote the script with Harald Kloser.

You know you’re in for a dumb movie when the trailer claims that the Mayans had the first human civilization, but then, that’s a redundancy for anyone who already knows its a Roland Emmerich film. Check out those oh-so-subtle moments with Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam splitting in half or the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy crushing the White House. Who knows, maybe this will be dumb fun. I still love Independence Day after all these years even though it’s got tons of cheese, plot holes and bad science. There’s something to be said for watching the world burn… and there’s no denying the film has a pretty good cast.

2012 will hit theaters on November 13th.
