Cast lines up for remake of Das Experiment

The Experiment posterAnother remake is in the works, this one of the 2001 thriller Das Experiment, which was directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. The remake, The Experiment, is to be directed by Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring from a script he also wrote. Joining the cast are Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood and Cam Gigandet. The film is inspired by the infamous Standford prison experiment in 1971 where volunteers were split into two groups of prisoners and guards and studied as they inhabited these roles, with the latter quickly discovering sadistic pleasures with their authorities. In real life the experiment was ended after a few days, but Das Experiment tooks things to a very violent end as the researcher loses control. Brody is set to play the prisoners’ de facto leader, which would be Moritz Bleibtreu’s (the male lead from Run Lola Run) role. In the original, that character was a newspaper writer who infiltrated the experiment hoping to get a fascinating story out of it. No idea if that remains here. Whitaker will play one of the guards.

It seems, between the remake itself and the poster, that Paul Scheuring is unable to escape prisons and tattoos. I’d hardly consider the remake necessary in any way. The original was quite good, but these days anything in a foreign language is ripe for an immediate redo. At least they managed to wait almost a decade to touch this one.
