Duncan Jones is the director of Moon, which will reach at least New York and Los Angeles come two Fridays from now (6/12). It had a good bit of acclaim coming out of Sundance and looks to be a fairly serious and intelligent science fiction picture. I’m quite looking forward to seeing it. Well now he’s lined up a second film, that being an adaptation of Escape from the Deep by Alex Kershaw. It’s a true story circa late World War II about the U.S. submarine Tang that was hit by its own torpedo and the desperate attempts by its crew to survive not only their own problems but also the Japanese ships above it. Alex Kershaw will write the screenplay.
I’m not sure how much there is left to do in the submarine genre, and based on a true story to boot, but I suppose we’re about due for another. There’s obviously potential, but it’s not exactly jumping onto my list of films I’m keeping an eye on. Maybe Moon will change that though.
