The first trailer has arrived for Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Kelly Reilly and Eddie Marsan. It’s directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, RocknRolla) and written by Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg. It’s obviously based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters, but also a recent comic book adaptation by Lionel Wigram. In this adventure follows Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as they apprehend Lord Blackwood who is given the death penalty, only for him to apparently return from the grave to further his plots against London. The action and humor have obviously been ramped up, which is probably what’s to be expected from a modern Hollywood version.
I can’t say I’m amazed by anything here, but it looks like it could be a perfectly fun and light-hearted romp. There’s nothing wrong with one of those every once in a while, and Robert Downey Jr. seems to excel in them. Plus he’s surrounded by a very solid cast, so hopefully it turns out well enough.
Sherlock Holmes is set for release on December 25th, 2009.
