Good news and bad news. The good news is that Magnet (which handled Let the Right One In and Timecrimes) will be releasing the Red Cliff duology in the United States in the fall. The bad news is that the theatrical release will be a drastically shortened combination of both films. Video-on-demand and home video releases will still involve the original two two-hour films, but they’ll be combined into a single two and a half hour film for theaters.
Red Cliff Part I and Red Cliff Part II tell the story of China’s Battle of Red Cliffs, a decisive event at the end of the Han Dynasty leading into the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. The films are specifically adapted from the accounts of the Records of Three Kingdoms, written in the third century. John Woo directed both parts which star Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Wei, Hu Jun, Nakamura ShidÅ and Lin Chi-ing.
