Rob Marshall, the director of Chicago, is wrapping up another adaptation of a Broadway musical with Nine. There’s a rather long chain of sources, but to cut it short Nine is adapted from a play inspired by Federico Fellini’s 8½. It tells the tale of a film director having simultaneous creative and personal crises while completing his latest work, and he’s lead into a number of complicated relationships with all sorts of women. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the troubled director and he’ll be surrounded by Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren and Stacy Ferguson (Fergie).
The photography is beautiful, but I’m usually a hard sell when it comes to musicals, and I’m an especially hard sell for anything put out by the Weinsteins come awards season. (The Road is a notable exception for one that I have no reservations about).
But I really cannot believe Daniel Day-Lewis is in a film with Fergie. That’s a sign of the apocalypse if I’ve ever seen one.
Anyway, Nine is set to open on November 25th.
