New CD of Koyaanisqatsi’s score coming

Koyaanisqatsi posterA new disc is coming featuring 76 minutes of the amazing and famous Philip Glass score to Koyaanisqatsi arrives in two weeks. Previously there was an extremely short sampling of its score on CD and later a more complete rerecording, but this CD (or download for those 21st century fellows) is a remastered version of the original recordings. It doesn’t quite cover all of the music written or included in the film, but it’s the most accurate and complete score to date.

Some of you will recognize pieces from Koyaanisqatsi that Zack Snyder repurposed in Watchmen when Dr. Manhattan left Earth and reflected on his past. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this segment was also my favorite of that film.

And if you haven’t seen Koyaanisqatsi, what are you waiting for? It’s an 87 minute tone poem composed of time-lapse and slow motion photography about “crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living,” which is what the title means in Hopi. Drink some coffee and then just succumb to the music and imagery. It’s something special.
