Teaser trailer: District 9

District 9The teaser trailer for District 9 has arrived, and it is glorious. This is the film that shares a spot in my top three most anticipated of the summer with Up and Terminator Salvation. I’ve been a fan of Neill Blomkamp’s short film and commercial work for a few years now, seeing him deliver an original and awesome-looking science fiction film is the kind of treat we don’t get nearly often enough.

Director Neill Blomkamp has reworked the concept of his short film Alive in Joburg (watch that here) for this feature involving alien refugees in South Africa. District 9 is the tale of a journalist covering the story and what happens to his views and allegiances after becoming infected by the aliens. The script was written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell.

For a bit of history, Neill Blomkamp was the man Peter Jackson selected to direct the aborted Halo adaptation. When that was halted, the two maintained their relationship and the fruits of that would be this Peter Jackson-produced and Neill Blomkamp-directed film. That’s something I have to give Jackson credit for, he’s actually showing an interest in using his Hollywood power to give rise to a new creative voice as opposed to some other big shots.

Oh, and the teaser earns a lot of bonus points for using Cliff Martinez’s absolutely amazing score from Solaris. That’s one of my favorite scores and it works well here too.

Now get to it, check out the teaser trailer. District 9 will hit theaters on August 14th.
