Let the Right One In
As I hoped, The Digital Bits got in touch with Magnolia over this Let the Right One In controversy.
Magnolia’s statement:
“We’ve been made aware that there are several fans that don’t like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version.”
Digital Bits asked if there might be an exchange program that could be put into place, but Magnolia said that there were no plans for such a move. Future printings of the film would include the original subtitle track and under the tech specs on the back of the box there be a label for “English (theatrical)” subtitles.
It’s still possible an exchange could happen, but so far Magnolia’s declining. I understand they’re a smaller company and thus an exchange program can be costly, but it’d be the right move. It’d be nice for fans and DVD/Blur-ray buyers, especially in the context of all the other foreign genre films Magnolia is distributing. You don’t want to make moves that might upset the demographic for your other products. I know that I want to have faith that Timecrimes will get the proper home video treatment too.
Anyway, for now Magnolia has acknowledged the issue and the proper and/or better subtitle track will be on future shipments of the film. That’s better than nothing.
