Year One is the next directorial effort from Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, and of course known as Egon from Ghostbusters). It stars Jack Black and Michael Cera as failed hunter-gatherers who are expelled from their tribe two thousand years ago and explore Biblical times. Paul Rudd, David Cross, Oliver Platt, Olivia Wilde, Hank Azaria and Christopher Mintz-Plasse co-star. Ramis co-wrote the script with The Office writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (a show for which Ramis has also directed three episodes). They’re also the duo working on Ghostbusters 3, so I’d assume Ramis is quite pleased with their work.
The trailer looks alright. Jack Black and Michael Cera seem to play the same characters they always do, but while wearing hides and furs. There’s a very modern self-consciousness to the proceedings, which may be a good or bad thing depending on your comedic tastes. I could go either way. I don’t see myself going out of my way to see this, but I’ll at least rent it. I am, after all, a huge fan of Harold Ramis.
