Pey'j is returning
In an extremely welcome announcement, Ubi Soft has revealed that a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil is in development. Very few details were actually provided, other than its existence and that designer-extraordinaire Michel Ancel is back behind the wheel. Composer Christophe Heral has also confirmed to Music 4 Games that he’ll be returning, which is likewise awesome news. A little teaser trailer is available over at Game Trailers, which focuses on the Pey’j character, while protagonist Jade is largely seen in an indirect fashion. Given the graphics being witnessed (reportedly rendered in-engine), the game is presumably being prepped for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No word on when the game might be ready for release.
The first Beyond Good & Evil, released on all of the previous generation consoles in the Fall of 2003, was a pretty sweet action-adventure title that revolved around a news reporter becoming increasingly involved in fending off an alien invasion and unraveling some related conspiracies. Coinciding with the fantastic art direction, the game’s main attraction was probably the seemingly living and breathing world found within. All sorts of beings and animals roamed the city and its outskirts, and great care was put into making the alien invasion feel much larger than anything the player could witness. There were things happening on far larger scales than initially appeared, and the game beautifully weaved plot reveals into game objectives, really making you feel as if you were legitimately discovering astonishing truths about your environment. It was strongly cinematic in that regard. It was, of course, scripted on some level, but it didn’t feel like it.
I say, bring it on. I’ll be there day one. And if you haven’t played the original, get to it.
