The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!

Radiohead may be the biggest act to release an album with a flexible payment scheme via the Internet, but they weren’t the first nor will they be the last. On November 1st comes the new Saul Williams LP, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!, as produced by Trent Reznor. Reznor is saying this is the most involved he’s been in a non-Nine Inch Nails album since producing Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar in ‘96, and Williams is calling it a “love child” by the two of them.

The experiment is as follows: for absolutely nothing you can get the album in 192 kbps MP3. For $5 you can choose between the former, 320 kbps MP3, or FLAC. All of that will be DRM-free. That should shut up everyone that a problem with the 160 kbps that In Rainbows was in (granted, it would have been nice of them to announce the tech specs before they started taking orders, though anyone who cared could have just as easily waited).

For those unfamiliar with Saul Williams, a good introduction might be “List of Demands (Reparations)”.

Sounds good to me. He’s got my $5.
