Sounds like the proposed Justice League movie is going to be one of those 100% motion captured affairs. I’m glad it won’t have anything to do with Nolan’s Batman trilogy but color me totally unimpressed with motion capture for photo-real endeavors. It’s a handy shortcut for certain special effects sequences or for video games, but so far it’s just a bastard process when it comes to complete films. It wants to be live-action and animation at once, but comes off as neither. Beowulf was supposed to change that, but the current trailer looks ridiculous in too many ways to count.
The only hope for this tech is going to come in the form of James Cameron’s Avatar. Now there’s a man that knows how to maximize special effects technology for the benefit of an actual movie, and not just a two hour tech demo. Plus, we know his film won’t be 100% CGI. It’s got at least a month of live-action shooting going on, and he’s got about $195 million and more than two full years to make the tech really work.
